Phytosterols are plant sterols structurally similar to cholesterol that act in the intestine to reduce the absorption of cholesterol. Plant sterols are naturally occurring substances present in many plants, such as avocados, pecans, pumpkin seeds, rice bran, wheat germ, soya bean, broccoli, pea, saw palmetto. This phytosterols were extracted from soybean. Vegetable oil is one of the dietary sources for phytosterols. The major forms of phytosterols are beta-sitosterol, campesterol, stigmasterol, and brassicasterol. Clinic research found that supplement phytosterols reduce Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and increase in the amount of High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, or called “good” cholesterol[1]. Combination of dietary phytosterols and niacin can synergistically increases HDL-cholesterol levels [2]. Phytersterols are generally safe for consumption, there is not safety information for long-term use.
