In the United States, aspartame is used as a food additive. The safety of aspartame has been affirmed by the U.S. FDA 26 times in the past 23 years. FDA has concluded that aspartame is safe as a general purpose sweetener in food.

Note: Because Aspartame’s breakdown products include phenylalanine, aspartame must be avoided by people with the genetic condition phenylketonuria (PKU).
